Re: [DIY] On the subject of concrete

An actual tunnel or just high retaining walls?  Did they backfill around the entire house?  Interesting.  Walk-out basements are popular here due to all the hilly ground.   Ours was two story at the front, 3 at the back & had wide retaining walls extending out from each side of the garage.  I don't know any of the specifics since we hired a concrete crew to do it.  The house sat on a hill with the front at ground level and they dug out the hill at the back allowing for a 3 car garage at the side and a walk-out basement to the back.  We called it the basement but there were several rooms, closet under the stairs and a bathroom so it made a perfect guest apt.    The retaining wall tapered from about 10' down to ground level.  Seems like it was about 8" thick, maybe more - french drain with the black drain pipe with small holes - was installed all around the front.  With the dirt they dug out they made a low hill further back.  With a lot of sweat,  MO rocks and fertilizer, we turned it into a vertical garden.  Our were wide, extended walls about 20' on each side of the house, but I've seen homes with just an opening the width of the garage and unless it's graded properly they do have water problems.

Since there seems to be some here that like to dabble in concrete. I'm toying on a major (I guess) project. Our house was built basement at ground level then fill was brought in and backfilled around the basement. The house actually sits on a man made hill due to a major stream not to far away. I have been thinking of digging out from the basement door across where we park our vehicles,
