I recall my first experience with Florida in the late 60's and they were selling rocks by the pound.  We lived on the Mass, New Hampshire line and joked that they cross bred the cows with ant eaters so they could feed on the grass from in between the rocks.  In Missouri I've been told that they don't measure land by the acre but by the depth of the dirt, anything over 4 inches is considered to be a ranch.

You're right about the dirt, we used to pack the round pens with about a foot of sand in CA - first time we ordered sand here we got a big surprise.  It's priced like gold here.
