Yelp is a local directory service that gives general information about local businesses and allows people to post
comments. Not restricted to contractors.
For example, it's very popular in the Metro DC area for looking up ratings for local eating establishments..
Of course, with all online rating systems, you have to be careful because there are people who are a little left of center
that may have a personal vendetta against a store/restaurant/person and will post some really nasty, not necessarily
accurate, information. Also, there's been a trend where some establishment employees will post overly positive reviews
for their own place so it raises their rating. My rule of thumb is the more ratings the more accurate it'll most likely
be.
This is just another example of how someone on the internet can absolutely ruin a business with the business
having little or no recourse. No matter what the court rules, this handyman's career is forever tainted.

Subject: [DIY] Woman sued for $750,000 over Yelp review
I never heard of Yelp before but it sounds like the
purpose is to review the work of local contractors.
I meant to post this when I read it but I got sidetracked
for a few days.

This one-star review earned her one lawsuit.
Fairfax home-owner Jane Perez wrote a poison-pill review of a contractor on Yelp, citing work he failed to do and jewelry missing from her home. She gave him one star, noting "do not put yourself through this nightmare of a contractor."
