One of my favorite gadgets, acquired just this year is a laser measuring device. You place at one end of a room and shoot the laser beam to the opposite wall and it measures the distance with 1/16" accuracy. It will also calculate area and volume, when you take the appropriate measurements. It is very nice for doing remodeling work in a house to calculate wall paint area, floor area, etc. I also used it to get quick measurements for making scaled room drawings to plan furniture layouts. I have also used it to take measurements outdoors in daylight, to help plan landscaping.
It is a luxury item, but worth it to me. Get a quality one, if you do. The cheap ones are not very reliable or accurate. I purchased a Bosch DLR130K ($75).
