I guess the law about this varies from state to state... or maybe even from county to county within the state.

Here in Ga. you are suppose to kill all Raccoons caught as they can carry rabies and it is too costly to keep them for an allotted time to discern if they are or aren't infected.

Possums can be released as long as it is not close to other homes.

People who are agriculture  zoned are encouraged to *handle their own problems* when it comes to keeping their livestock safe from predators.
Coyotes were killing all the foals dropped during the night at a friend's farm and she went of a night-watch and killed several over a period of months.
The way I see it with the raccoons, I am just tweaking the food chain a bit by feeding the local buzzards... after all, they also need to survive and are wonderful clean-up crews.
