Joyce, you probably know acetone will take off paint finish, your nail polish and a whole lot of other things you don't want removed.   I have an old cookie sheet I use under such things if I do them in the house.   Not being able to see your totem, you might want to wrap something absorbent, maybe a strip of paper towel around it so when you add the the acetone it will hold it against the glue long enough to loosen it.   Old fashioned nail polish remover works if you don't have a can of acetone.

I havent tried acetone but will tomorrow. I tried rubbing alcohol and that did nothing
