Re: [DIY] Dishwasher is DEAD DEAD DEAD

FYI I was told that Sears is discontinuing their extended warranty. Pretty disappointing because the only reason I purchased carpet cleaners (shampooers) from Sears was because they offered a great extended warranty.

I don't know if any dishwashers last like they used to.  My daughter had a Bosch and she ended up hating it.  She replace it with a Kitchenaid.  It failed after a year and is getting repaired under warranty.  I have a 4 year old Kitchenaid that's still going. However, I must admit, it has had a number of repairs - all covered by Sears 4 year extended warranty (excellent!). I believe most of the repairs stemmed from using dishwasher packs in the dispensor in the door.  We had heavy residue build up in the dishwasher over time because the detergent did not completely dissolve, resulting in premature failure of the food chopper wheel and the internal pump (at age 3 years).  We started putting the detergent pack in the bottom of the dishwasher as directed by the repairman.  Not only do we not have residue buildup any more but also, the dishes come our radiantly clean with no spots on the glassware.

Our 19yo Kitchenaid dishwasher finally died. It fills up but doesn't wash or drain. Not surprised, it's pretty old and the control panel buttons lettering have pretty much worn off and it's not cleaning as well as it used to.  I think we got our moneys worth after 19 years so we're good with getting a new one. This Kitchenaid dishwasher has been a real workhorse.

Soo...we're in the search for a new dishwasher.  Like the Kitchenaid, we don't believe in buying a low end appliance since it'll most likely end up costing us in the long run.

We've looked at Bosch, Kitchenaid, Asko, Fisher and Paykel (we have their washer and dryer and really like it) and some others.  My wife saw a friends new Asko and is seriously considering that brand/model.

Any comments/recommendations on a replacement dishwasher?  We have to do this either TONIGHT or Saturday. We have a very busy household and the thought of hand washing everything is frightening.
