Re: [DIY] Computer printer ink

I have been refilling my HP printer cartridges for years with great success. I purchase from IMS  and have even bought black ink in a pint bottle that has lasted for years. Black refills work best for me as refilling color is not as satisfactory. The tiny color reservoirs seem to have more difficulty, but refilling a couple of times for color seems to be OK. I can refill the black cartridges until they stop working, maybe 10 or 12 times.

There is a sensor for fill level that can be reset but has not been worth the trouble for me. If interrogating the cartridge says it is empty but it still works perfectly, who cares. When the print quality degrades, I then buy a new factory cartridge. It saves you lots of money.

Cannon cartridges can also be refilled but each manufacturer has a different nozzle scheme and uses different inks. HP seems to work best for me.

The only caution I would add for ink refills is that some of those pesky cartridges have built in sensors that

indicate when they're empty and are nearly (or are) impossible to reset.  Consequently, refilling them

will still show empty and some printers will shut down if they think the cartridges are empty.

I personally think that manufacturers did this to prevent aftermarket refilling of their cartridges and forces

you to buy their overpriced replacements.  What's even more interesting is that OEM cartridges are typically

only 1/2 to 2/3 filled and for their "high capacity" cartridges, which you pay a premium price for, they're just

filled to 100%.

And THAT really twists my tightie whities.

Having said that, for those of you that are Costco members (I think Sams Club also has it), you can take your

empty cartridges in and they will refill them for you for less than 1/3 the price of a new one.  I've done that and

they can usually refill them for you while you shop (for the $200 worth of stuff you don't need of course).   :-)

Cartridges can usually be refilled as many as a dozen times depending on the condition of the cartridge but if the

nozzles are clogged with dried ink they're totaled and can't be refilled..

Oh, and Office Depot will take empty cartridges and give you a $3 credit per cartridge.  Turn in enough of them and you

can buy a new one for nothing.

I bit the bullet and went to laser printers only.  One for full color and the other for B/W because the ink went bad before we would use it up and it just seemed to make sense.

That is nice to know, because Lexmark used to make cheap printers, but had dedicated ink cartridges for their printers that could not be refilled, but which were very expensive, about the same as their printers.

You are correct.  I stopped buying HP because in the past you could not get good clone ink for HP.  But now I hear that you can clone everybody.

Maybe this can save someone a few dollars.  For years I've been re-filling my ink cartridges with fair sucess.  About a year ago I got a new HP printer and have had terrible luck with re-filling. My previous one was also HP, a different model.
Anyhow, I've now tried re-filled cartridges purchased on ebay and have great success with them at really low prices.
Note to anyone who thinks I'm spamming:
I have no association with the sellers other than buying from them, and there are a lot of sellers on ebay, but the one I'm using is ezink123.
Thought someone might want to try this.  Ed
