Ground fault interrupters are designed to protect from electrical shock by interrupting a household circuit when there is a difference in the currents in the "hot" and neutral wires. Such a difference indicates that an abnormal diversion of current from the "hot" wire is occurring.

I am looking at my fuse box and it appears that one of my circuits is only protected by a ground fault interrupter like you put into a wall socket.

Does a GFI open if the current gets too high or does it only watch for spikes?
