Re: [DIY] Re: LP Gas

We've used propane most of our adult life since we always lived out.  We've had both rented and purchased tanks, once at the same time.  We rented a 500-gal tank for the large house we built and owned the existing 250 tank for the smaller house I used for my business.   If one tank got low we just switched to the other one. Like having two gas tanks in your truck.   We filled them twice a year.  When we had a smaller tank at a smaller home we had them topped off every three months.  Last tank we rented was $7 a month but that was a few years back, I've no idea what it is now.  It was a chunk of money to fill the tanks each time, but we planned for it like anything else.

You probably don't deal with snow or ice where you are, but knowing the delivery truck can get to you all year long is important.  About 14 years ago during a very bad ice storm that came way too early, they were not able to deliver out of town because the trucks couldn't get up the rural roads.  I don't know what other companies did but when we got low and the big truck couldn't get up our drive, the driver came back in his own 4x pickup with a small tank for us to use until the weather let up with no extra charge.  It pays to make friends with your driver :)

Some people used the prepay when it came out and I think saved some money.  The price fluctuates in the winter but since we filled our tanks in early fall we avoided the price jump.  Our well used electricity which was a pain when it went out but we used propane for everything else.  I figured it up once and our cost for a year of propane was comparable to our cost for utilities when we lived in town.  It was a small town and they gave us the option of paying once a year, twice a year or each time it was delivered.  Same with the bank, we made our house payment once a year, LOL.
