1" eh? I saw Ivy Trees yesterday at my son's new place.
Find or make a solution of supergreen liquid fert.
Like the NPK is 20-x-x. Last 2 numbers don't matter.

Water the ivy at the soil level & spray the super-N
on the leaves. Sorta like you on speed. Later, you
can add a good tsp atop any huge root you dig to
but cannot dig up.
