I would get a heavy drop cloth.  You might be using the thin stuff that's better to cover things like furniture.  If you think you'll be doing a lot of painting, investing in a cloth drop cloth, one that's about 9x12 would be helpful.

I second this,  I much prefer the cloth drop cloths.  You can get them at Wal-Mart for under $20, they come in a variety of sizes.  They don't tear,  they stay put, don't need to be taped down but can be if you like, and when you're finished just fold them up and they're ready for the next job - you can even run them through the washing machine.  I also use ours to tack up across the patio when I need to work out there and the wind comes up and/or cover things I'm working on if I leave them out overnight.

When we had the ceilings painted a couple of years ago the painting contractor moved the furniture to the center of the room, laid a large cloth drop cloth over everything right up to the walls then used the pre-taped paper over the baseboards.  We had the entire house done and I learned a lot about prep and cleanup from those guys.  Not sure if you have WalMart where you are but if so these things are very inexpensive and well worth the money.
