I'm sure there are a lot of unscrupulous mechanics out there but in defense of all the others who do do a good job  let's not paint them with the same brush, or the same grease can or whatever :)  In the 15 years we've lived here we have dealt with several dealers, independent auto mechanics, truck mechanics and farm equipment mechanics.  Never once did any one of them try to cheat us or otherwise give us bad advice and I can't remember any over the years who have.  We recently had a problem with our 9yr old car - the ignition shut off while we were driving and the service engine light came on.  We were in a rural area 50 miles from home so called the dealer who advised us to go ahead and drive it, with caution.  It stopped twice more but each time restarted in a few minutes.  We took it in, the dealer replaced a sensor.  Don't remember the exact price but was several hundred.  Three days later I had gone to Branson to the airport, which is 5 miles off the highway on a  two-lane winding road, 9pm and my car stops.  I was only 30 miles from home but hesitant to drive it.  Long story short, I got home & DH took it back to the dealer.  They had replaced one sensor but not the second one, said they'd never seen both sensors go bad at the same time.  When the car was done, there was no bill.  They said they had test driven it but it was their fault they hadn't caught it, so no charge.   As it happens this model car is one that has to be repaired by a dealer.  It's a nice car so I don't want to buy a new one until we have to.   They could easily talk DH into buying a new car anytime he's in there - he'd love a reason to get a new one -  but always give us good service and good advice, ie, this car should last us another five years if we take care of it.
