RE: [DIY] Re: Im trying out an auto question

Evidently, you have not had a lot of dealings with the dealer, we had a
corvette and we were told by two different dealers that we needed to find
somewhere else to have it repaired as they had no one certified in servicing
a vette, then the last time, they told us that yes they could now replace
the ac compressor, but it would be almost 3 thousand dollars, I had it done
at a racing shop for 1200 including parts. When someone does not want to
work on something they will find a way not to.

The electronics are not really a problem but drive line design. They are a
royal pain to work on. Even the spark plugs take a contortionist to change.
Plus they use plug mounted coils which have to come off. New Beetles and
several others fit into this category. Many mechanics would just prefer not
to deal with them and tell people they can only be worked on by the dealer,
who can hardly refuse.

something to do with the (I think) computerized electrical system, which
requires a dealer to unlock it (?). Learned this from an auto parts store
when we had trouble with the battery a couple of years after buying the car.
Had to have it towed in but the dealer replaced it at no cost. Our regular
mechanic, who takes care of our other vehicles, recommended for this
particular car, we always take it to the dealer. Not that he didn't have
the ability but it's an expensive car to repair with a very sensitive
computer system which requires specialized equipment & parts that only
dealers have. We've dealt with this shop for 15 years, all types of repairs
on all types of vehicles, and DH has so much respect for them he has
occasionally had them double check something the dealer told us :)

It's a nice car so I don't want to buy a new one until we have to. They
could easily talk DH into buying a new car anytime he's in there - he'd love
a reason to get a new one - but always give us good service and good advice,
ie, this car should last us another five years if we take care of it.
