RE: [DIY] Back of dryer is hot

At first thought, it sounds like the hot air from the dryer is not venting to the outside via the duct; possibly because of a disconnect or tear.  This might be caused by age or even a blocked vent.

There are stackable units (dryer over washer) that can be purchased.  DO NOT physically stack a dryer on top of the washer.  Not only does the dryer have a tendency to walk and then fall off, but the washer is not designed for the weight.

Since the unit is 14 years old, I would suggest go ahead and buy a stackable unit.  Make sure you take measurements to be sure you can actually put the unit in the space you want.  Last thing you need is to have the unit delivered but it cannot fit the space.  Also be sure that all water supply and waste lines and the duct vent are accessible for the unit.

Be sure to vent the dryer to the outside NOT to the attic or the crawl space underneath - not only is it a fire hazard, but the humidity will cause problems with the wooden beams - moist wood creates easy termite food (other insects like moist wood, too) and causes mold to grow.

Subject: [DIY] Back of dryer is hot

Is it ok/normal for the top-rear of the dryer to be so hot it burns to the touch? I really should not put anything on top, is that correct? I have a foil coiled flex tube for the duct leading outside to small vent. Is there any routine maintenance that should be done with those items. Have not had any repairs for 10 years. The machines are 14 years old.

Also, is there an issue re: stacking a full size dryer on top of full size front load washer? Really would like to rearrange current layout. It claims to be do-able per the manual.
