There are all kinds of files. Use a flat file. The more coarse it is the easier it will be to get it to remove metal. A file about an inch to an inch and a half wide will fit in your hands well and take enough material off to not overwork yourself.
Keep the file flat when you stroke it forwards. Avoid making an arching motion. An arching motion will make a rounded cut, not a flat one. Secure the item your filing so it can't move around. Either vice grip or clamp it to something heavy or use a vice. That will make it much easier.
