Re: [DIY] Antenna < Bill/ Erecting a 30' pole

ARRL, a Hamm radio handbook, used to say that their
antennas couldn't be over 50 Ft, I thiMk I recall. For
short distances, you lose 4" of line-of-sight per mile.

Fire up Google earth. Find out where TV transmitters
are, and look at elevations in between. 30 miles?
7.5 ft (plus an error for the rough estimation which
changes on a circle.) Then add 15 ft for 1 story
houses in the way. Then some fudge factor. Then
drive around and see what folks have, if any, LOL!
I bet even a local permit office has been asked,
and has HEARD, what is sorta needed.

Don't stick 20 ft on a 3 ft balcony railing or 10 ft on
a chimney. You CAN do a  "sorta easy" 20 ft rooftop,
with guys, if careful. But you are up 15 ft already,
so maybe 15 more is enuf. 2 story? You are up 25 ft
already. Do a 10 ft & 1 set of 3-4 guys? Oh, yes. You
don't like ladders. Hmm... (& remem the rotor.)

Maybe see if there are any local HAMMs. Watch for
license plates like 6V552. They have the knowledge
& skills & contacts. Look at big weird antennas. LOL!

>About 25 years ago I built a 50' tall antenna pivot pole. The anchor poles are 2-7/8" steel tubing and the mast itself start out 2-7/8" at the bottom and changes dimensions about every 10'. Actually now it's only about 44' tall. A hurricane, I don't recall which one, bent the 3/4" portion at the top and I cut it down at that time. Since then it has survived quite nicely. I know most DIYer's don't have the ability to do a project like this but just know it's possible. Rich B
