You mention buying a "cheap Ryobi" skill saw- I was actually thinking about getting a Ryobi skill saw; is this
something I should stay away from?

Under old linoleum?
Very common old technique.

Laying plywood? NOT beyond you, if you can buy a cheap Ryobi
"skill" saw & handle it safely. If ya wanna... ask.

SOMEtimes you don't wanna raise a floor's height, esp 3/4".
There is other stuff, and other ways. Not hard... just tedious
in that you can't skip steps and get a good result. You leave
carrots outta a salad, you can "go back." A floor is layers;
no can do. Takes time is all.
