[DIY] Re: Sticky finish on wood

Is the artist local? Can you ask what was used? Before you try to change the surface coating, you need to know what was used.

Has it had time to dry/cure? Could you elaborate on "sticky"? If the coating applied is an acrylic, maybe what you feel is the plastic quality. If the seal coat was applied too heavy it may be irregularities in the surface that you are feeling. One possible corrective method would be to use a super fine grit sand paper (test on the bottom)and polish up the finish.

I want to remove the lacquer? shellac? polyurethane? I've tried dawn detergent, alcohol & acetone with no luck. I also have denatured alcohol and turpentine I could try. I could put a poly finish over it but don't think that's the answer. Would putting it in the oven on low heat help? I need to fix the finish without harming the painted portion.
