Re: [DIY] Re: Central AC - Resolution

Probably didn't need the freon if the unit was cooling as expected.

I wanted to get back to you, especially the ones who offered input on our AC problem.
Thur. 6/7 - We noticed a loud humming in AC unit outside (humming
would come & go, or maybe we'd adjust temp. up high & it
would stop, etc.);
Fri. 6/8 - At some point on Fri., I think, we noticed that the
fan on the outside unit was not cutting off. All the
while the AC was cooling just fine. That fan ran 24/7 on
thru' 'til late Sat. night.
Sat. 6/9 - We cooled the house down & cut the unit off via the
breaker.
Sun. 6/10 - It continued to cool just fine. At some point, late
Sun., we realized the fan on the unit outside was not run-
ning! We went to sleep, hoping the repairman would come
early on Mon.
Mon. 6/11 - Repairman came around 7:50 a.m. I'm not sure I can
read his handwriting, but the best I can tell, here's his
report: "Found bad contactor ($55) & capacitor ($45); low
freon, added 2 pounds R-22 ($90) & replaced breaker (that
we supplied), labor for 1.5 hrs.- $135", plus tax for a
total of $340.20!! Ouch!!
There was evidence of some burning on one of the wires, the one leading to the compressor. There was slight melting of the plastic coating to the wire. This sounds like just about what you all suspected. Thanks for your input & advice.
