Re: [DIY] Re: Some thoughts on contractors

Not to sound nasty, but what do you expect from a Home Depot contractor.
Guys who contract work through home centers are generally regarded as bottom
of the barrel, and quite often fly-by-night.
--------------------------------

I understand that a lot of people don't like Home Depot. I've not had any
trouble with the one here. I think a lot has to do with local management.
That said, this contractor does not work for Home Depot. Before I called
the first time, I checked the name of the company in the phone book, where
they have a quite prominent ad in the yellow pages. Plus, I do believe that
I've seen their trucks, or at least one with their name on it, out and
about. I doubt it's a "fly-by-night" thing. I have a strong hunch that if
it was a man who'd called, there would have been no trouble remembering to
show up. I got that feeling as I spoke with the man on the phone, both
times. If nothing else, he kept calling me "dear." I've had to deal with
too many men who don't/won't listen to a woman, and that in itself set off
my 'BS alarm.'

Re: not returning calls - I've run into that from the first day I moved
here; it seems to be endemic here. Having just moved into my house, I had a
problem with my kitchen faucet. I called *every* local plumber listed in
the phone book and had to leave a message every time. One plumber called
back out of about a dozen. The one plumber not only got the job fixing the
faucet, he's now the only one I call for plumbing work. Same thing when I
needed some roof work done. Although a second contractor did come out with
an estimate, it was obvious by his manner that he really wasn't interested.
The first contractor not only got that roofing job, but now he's the one
doing the work on my rehab house, which is considerable.
