Fw: [DIY] Central AC Concern/Question

Howdy,

That compressor fan can run many times to cool down the coils and compressor sometimes until system calls for compressor again.  Living here in South I have seen mine run better than half the day due to the high temp outside.  The reason you feel no air movement inside at the vents is that air floe is done by the air handler blower thats in the addic with the cooling coils.

This blower is controled by the thermosate when it calls for the compressor to come for cooling.  When it does the compressor, the fan motor on compressor and the blower motor in addtic all come on.  The compressor motor shuts down sometimes the fan cooling it not the house will continue to run.

As long as that outside fan is running when the compressor is operating you should be ok, just keep an eye on it.

Thank you for the insight. Do you think we'd be ok to wait until Mon. to get the AC checked out? I think they'd charge more to come out on the weekend. Of course, if we saved ourselves from having to replace the compressor, we'd willingly pay more for a weekend service call. What about flipping the breaker switch tonight to MAKE it go off for awhile.....to "give it a rest"? We installed a new (supposedly) thermostat probably 2-3 yrs. ago & it's never acted just right. What I mean is that an acquaintance purchased it for us to get us "a deal", but he never provided a receipt or anything, but just told us how much it "cost". We paid him & never questioned him about the missing receipt. We've wondered since then if he actually bought a used one & had us reimburse him for a new one. :o( Could this (a worn out thermostat) have caused a problem?
